“Improvement and Spatial extension
of the European Fish Index ”

Introduction and Description

The main parts of the EFI+ software are the section for data input and the help chapter. Data input can be done manually as well as by using a predefined Excel datasheet which can be completed by end users and uploaded for the index computation.

For the manual data input several predefined values for selected variables are offered to be in line with the required coding of the different variables. The data which have to be given are split into obligatory and optional ones. Obligatory are those variables which are necessary for the computation of the metric values and the prediction of the fish type. Optional variables are e.g. additional fields characterising the sampling site.

After testing the positive response of the diadromous species metric during index development, a specific section was integrated into the software to compute the ratio of historically and actually present diadromous species. The calculation of this metric is handled as additional information to show the tendency of the assessment results when considering also diadromous species.

For data input, it's also possible to download a pre-defined Excel spreadsheet and to copy data into this spreadsheet, especially if a large number of sites has to be assessed.

Finally, the EFI+ software contains different help systems. For manual data input, selection boxes help to avoid misspelling for different variables and some variables have a mark up reference that helps users with definitions and deeper information.
When clicking the button “About”, users’ access to a web page with detailed help information, e.g. the EFI+ software manual and a glossary of terms are accessible in web format and in pdf-format.
